Balsamic turpentine oil

Balsamic turpentine oil should not be confused with turpentine oil substitutes, as these are petroleum-based substitute solvents. Balsamic turpentine oil is obtained by steam distillation from the balsam resin of various pine species worldwide. Balsamic turpentine oil is a vegetable, low-viscosity oil with a slightly resinous and fresh odor. Bio-based Binder

The bio-based binder used by AURO is specifically tailored to the requirements of lacquer paints, varnishes and wood stains and features a unique, innovative composition that is available to AURO exclusively in this biogenic quality. It is derived from plant alcohol esters sourced from pine and castor oil and currently still contains a small proportion of fossil monomers. The binder is undergoing continuous development, with fossil-based components being replaced by bio-based components at every stage of development, with the aim of steadily increasing the proportion of bio-based components as part of our research.

Hard, water-repellent wax from a Brazilian palm species. The leaves are cut off the tall palm trees (they constantly grow back), the wax is liquefied by boiling in water, skimmed off and physically cleaned (with bleaching earth). Due to its particular hardness, it complements the mechanical resilience of all soft waxes.

Pigment obtained from the pigment of the leaf green. The green pigment of the plant leaves is used as a copper complex in plant dyes and natural egg dyes.

Cork

Closing tissue that almost all green plants form on above-ground and underground parts. However, only the particularly thick cork layer of the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber), which is native to the Mediterranean region, can be used commercially. It is coarsely to finely ground and used as cork flour, cork meal.

Dammar

One of the most valuable and beautiful plant resins on earth. Its name comes from the Malay word for "cat's eye". It is very light in color and hardly yellows. Its tree of origin in Sumatra is also the supplier of meranti wood. The extraction of dammar resin allows the inhabitants to use the tropical forest sustainably without overexploitation. Using dammar is therefore active work against the destruction of tropical forests.

This crystallizes in graphite in hexagonal two-dimensional layers, which are also found in pencils. This special property makes it possible to write with pure carbon.

Plant color clay pigment

Color pigments for paints and wall paints produced using proprietary processes. The coloring drugs (reseda, madder, indigo, cochineal, leaf green, catechu, bluewood, etc.) are extracted with water with the addition of alum, then the pigment is precipitated as alumina color varnish with lyes, filtered and washed. A laborious process that sometimes takes many days to produce the harmonious, radiant shades.

Spinel pigments

Spinel pigments, formally derived from the mineral "spinel", occur as mixed oxides of magnesium and aluminum. If these metals are replaced by others in the crystal lattice through a thermal process, colored variants are obtained that can be used as pigments. These pigments allow us to extend the AURO color palette many times over and offer strong violet, yellow, blue, orange and green tones, for example.

Succinic Acid Esters

Succinic acid esters are solvent-active esters of naturally occurring succinic acid. The succinic acid is obtained from renewable raw materials (e.g., sugars/biogenic residues); the esters produced from it are bio-based, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly alternatives to petrochemical solvents. They are characterized by good solvency for resins and oils, low odor intensity, and are free of aromatic hydrocarbons. This makes succinic acid esters an ideal fit for the AURO raw-material concept for low-emission, sustainable coating materials.

Our Transparency Glossary

Transparent and clear communication is important to us. That is why, in our transparency glossary, we explain the terms and statements we use in connection with our products, our raw materials, and our corporate philosophy.

Our goal is to clearly explain how we use certain terms and what they mean at AURO. In this way, we provide clarity and enable a well-informed understanding of our communications.

Natural

At AURO, the term “natural” refers to the targeted use of substances of plant, animal, or mineral origin, such as oils, resins, pigments, and lime. We avoid petrochemical additives as much as possible. Since each product requires a unique composition depending on its intended use, we disclose our ingredients. A breakdown of the plant-based and mineral components is clearly listed in the full ingredient list on the respective label as well as on the product pages.

We define “ecological” as products and processes that are in harmony with natural ecosystems and do not burden natural material cycles. AURO primarily relies on renewable plant-based materials and abundant minerals to minimize dependence on petroleum-based products. Our formulations are continuously optimized to combine high environmental compatibility with technical functionality. Please refer to the product-specific full ingredient list to see which specific raw materials are contained in your product.

For AURO, sustainability means taking responsibility for people and the environment throughout a product’s entire life cycle. We evaluate our selection of raw materials, our manufacturing process in Braunschweig, and subsequent disposal according to the criteria of a closed-loop economy. Our goal is to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible, primarily by avoiding the use of synthetic solvents. We ensure transparency regarding ingredients through our full ingredient declaration on the containers.

We view our products as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic paints, as they are based on renewable raw materials and are gentle on the environment during production, processing, and decomposition. This is confirmed, among other things, by independent certifications for selected product lines. To ensure transparency, we disclose the composition of our products in our full ingredient list.

We use the term “healthy living” to describe the performance characteristics of our paints, which contribute to excellent indoor air quality by deliberately avoiding synthetic solvents, plasticizers, and building protection agents. Our wall paints, which are open to vapor diffusion, support the natural breathability of surfaces. In addition, our alkaline products (such as lime paints) naturally help prevent mold growth. Our wall paints are tested according to strict emission criteria (such as the AgBB testing schemes). Specific test results and the full declaration can be found on the respective product pages.

For us, durability is a key component of resource conservation. The less often a coat of paint needs to be reapplied, the fewer raw materials are consumed. We develop our oils, varnishes, and glazes to provide long-lasting protection for surfaces. Their mechanical strength as well as their resistance to wiping and washing are tested according to recognized official testing criteria and listed on the technical data sheets.

To the extent that AURO products are advertised as solvent-free, they meet the strict criteria of the VdL-RL 01 guideline (VOC content: < 1 g/l or below the analytical detection limit).

AURO wall paints are regularly tested according to the stringent criteria of the AgBB (Committee for the Health Assessment of Building Products). They fall well below the legal limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments and are considered low-emission.

The mold-inhibiting effect of our lime products is based purely on the physical and chemical properties of the natural alkalinity (high pH value) of slaked lime, without the addition of synthetic biocides. Photocatalytic effects (pollutant degradation in product No. 328) are based on the proven effect of catalyst minerals when exposed to light.

Environmental Product Declaration

We want to provide transparency regarding the environmental impact of our products. That is why Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are available for selected AURO products.

An EPD is a standardized environmental product declaration that documents a product’s environmental impacts throughout its entire life cycle. This includes, among other things, the raw materials used, manufacturing, use, and disposal. The information is based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) and enables a transparent evaluation and comparison of building products.

EPDs have been prepared for our REPLEBIN®-based wall paints and other products. They contain detailed information on the environmental impacts of the respective products, thereby providing a reliable basis for an assessment that is as transparent as possible.

Our Sustainability Report—Making Our Environmental Impact Transparent

For AURO, sustainability is not just a single area of focus, but a commitment that guides our daily work. Since our founding, we have relied on renewable and mineral-based raw materials, resource-efficient processes, and the development of products that have the least possible impact on people and the environment.

We take a holistic approach to sustainability: from the selection of our raw materials through manufacturing and packaging to the use and disposal of our products. At the same time, we continually evaluate existing processes and look for ways to further reduce our environmental footprint.

Through our sustainability report, we aim to transparently show where we stand today, what measures we are already implementing, and which issues we are continuing to address. We view sustainable development as an ongoing process—with the goal of improving step by step.

Outstanding Leadership

In recognition of our longstanding commitment to consistently using natural paints and biogenic raw materials, AURO Pflanzenchemie AG was awarded the 2025 German Sustainability Prize in the “Companies / Coatings and Paints” category.

The German Sustainability Award, presented by an independent jury of experts, honors companies that make effective contributions to the ecological transition. The award validates our approach of developing circular products based on plant- and mineral-based raw materials.
