At AURO, we harness the power of nature. Under our slogan,“Passion for natural paints,”we combine our philosophy with a clear commitment: We prioritize the use of plant-based and mineral raw materials and develop our products with the goal of using natural resources responsibly and thoughtfully.
We want to be transparent about what goes into our products. Depending on the formulation, we use a variety of raw materials—ranging from renewable plant oils to mineral components and other natural raw materials. On this page, we provide you with insight into the composition of our products and explain the basis of our paints and coatings.

Our Knowledge of Raw Materials
Our products are based on carefully selected plant-based and mineral raw materials. We have always been committed to using natural resources responsibly and harnessing their beneficial properties to create high-quality surface coatings.
Depending on the application and technical requirements, different raw materials are used. That is why the formulations of our products vary—ranging from those composed primarily of vegetable oils and resins to purely mineral-based solutions. Our Transparency Glossary
Transparent and clear communication is important to us. That is why, in our transparency glossary, we explain the terms and statements we use in connection with our products, our raw materials, and our corporate philosophy.
Our goal is to clearly explain how we use certain terms and what they mean at AURO. In this way, we provide clarity and enable a well-informed understanding of our communications.
Natural
At AURO, the term “natural” refers to the targeted use of substances of plant, animal, or mineral origin, such as oils, resins, pigments, and lime. We avoid petrochemical additives as much as possible. Since each product requires a unique composition depending on its intended use, we disclose our ingredients. A breakdown of the plant-based and mineral components is clearly listed in the full ingredient list on the respective label as well as on the product pages.
Eco-friendly
We define “ecological” as products and processes that are in harmony with natural ecosystems and do not burden natural material cycles. AURO primarily relies on renewable plant-based materials and abundant minerals to minimize dependence on petroleum-based products. Our formulations are continuously optimized to combine high environmental compatibility with technical functionality. Please refer to the product-specific full ingredient list to see which specific raw materials are contained in your product.
Sustainable
For AURO, sustainability means taking responsibility for people and the environment throughout a product’s entire life cycle. We evaluate our selection of raw materials, our manufacturing process in Braunschweig, and subsequent disposal according to the criteria of a closed-loop economy. Our goal is to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible, primarily by avoiding the use of synthetic solvents. We ensure transparency regarding ingredients through our full ingredient declaration on the containers.
Environmentally friendly
We view our products as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic paints, as they are based on renewable raw materials and are gentle on the environment during production, processing, and decomposition. This is confirmed, among other things, by independent certifications for selected product lines. To ensure transparency, we disclose the composition of our products in our full ingredient list.
Healthy Living
We use the term “healthy living” to describe the performance characteristics of our paints, which contribute to excellent indoor air quality by deliberately avoiding synthetic solvents, plasticizers, and building protection agents. Our wall paints, which are open to vapor diffusion, support the natural breathability of surfaces. In addition, our alkaline products (such as lime paints) naturally help prevent mold growth. Our wall paints are tested according to strict emission criteria (such as the AgBB testing schemes). Specific test results and the full declaration can be found on the respective product pages.
Durability & Protection
For us, durability is a key component of resource conservation. The less often a coat of paint needs to be reapplied, the fewer raw materials are consumed. We develop our oils, varnishes, and glazes to provide long-lasting protection for surfaces. Their mechanical strength as well as their resistance to wiping and washing are tested according to recognized official testing criteria and listed on the technical data sheets.
Solvent-free
To the extent that AURO products are advertised as solvent-free, they meet the strict criteria of the VdL-RL 01 guideline (VOC content: < 1 g/l or below the analytical detection limit).
Emissions-Tested / Indoor Air Quality
AURO wall paints are regularly tested according to the stringent criteria of the AgBB (Committee for the Health Assessment of Building Products). They fall well below the legal limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments and are considered low-emission.
Functional Properties (Pollutant Degradation & Mold Inhibition)
The mold-inhibiting effect of our lime products is based purely on the physical and chemical properties of the natural alkalinity (high pH value) of slaked lime, without the addition of synthetic biocides. Photocatalytic effects (pollutant degradation in product No. 328) are based on the proven effect of catalyst minerals when exposed to light.
Environmental Product Declaration
We want to provide transparency regarding the environmental impact of our products. That is why Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are available for selected AURO products.
An EPD is a standardized environmental product declaration that documents a product’s environmental impacts throughout its entire life cycle. This includes, among other things, the raw materials used, manufacturing, use, and disposal. The information is based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) and enables a transparent evaluation and comparison of building products.
EPDs have been prepared for our REPLEBIN®-based wall paints and other products. They contain detailed information on the environmental impacts of the respective products, thereby providing a reliable basis for an assessment that is as transparent as possible.

Our Sustainability Report—Making Our Environmental Impact Transparent
For AURO, sustainability is not just a single area of focus, but a commitment that guides our daily work. Since our founding, we have relied on renewable and mineral-based raw materials, resource-efficient processes, and the development of products that have the least possible impact on people and the environment.
We take a holistic approach to sustainability: from the selection of our raw materials through manufacturing and packaging to the use and disposal of our products. At the same time, we continually evaluate existing processes and look for ways to further reduce our environmental footprint.
Through our sustainability report, we aim to transparently show where we stand today, what measures we are already implementing, and which issues we are continuing to address. We view sustainable development as an ongoing process—with the goal of improving step by step.
Outstanding Leadership
In recognition of our longstanding commitment to consistently using natural paints and biogenic raw materials, AURO Pflanzenchemie AG was awarded the 2025 German Sustainability Prize in the “Companies / Coatings and Paints” category.
The German Sustainability Award, presented by an independent jury of experts, honors companies that make effective contributions to the ecological transition. The award validates our approach of developing circular products based on plant- and mineral-based raw materials.
