Paint walls correctly
Preparation
- Empty the room, move bulky furniture to the center of the room and cover with foil.
- Sweep off loose parts from the walls and remove dust from the surface. The substrate should be dry, firm and clean.
- Holes and cracks can be filled with wall filler to achieve an even surface.
- If necessary, remove the baseboards, sockets and light switches or cover them with Mask off the painter’s tape (switch off the power!). The edges on the ceiling double mask off and cover the floor with painter’s fleece. Painter’s fleece from the roll is an advantage. It is easy to roll out and can be used several times. Door frames and also mask the edges of window frames with painter’s tape.
Notes
Substrate check: Before painting the wall, make sure the substrate is stable. If the substrate is highly absorbent, apply a primer is required beforehand. We recommend that you carry out a test coat on highly absorbent or very contrasting walls.
If the ceiling is also being painted, always paint it first to prevent paint stains on the walls to be painted later.
Clean color finishes
For neat paint finishes on wall corners, ceilings or transitions to another color, stick adhesive tape, also known as masking tape, to the surface and press it down firmly. When buying masking tape, it is worth investing in high-quality material. Removing: After painting, simply remove the masking tape while it is still wet and slowly remove. When dry, some of the paint may inadvertently peel off.
Brush the paint well into the corners. Do not apply the wall paint too thickly around the edges. Smooth out the paint again to the left and right of the corner. Repeatedly dip the brush into the paint and paint the edge area.
Working with the paint roller from the bucket or paint tray
If you are working directly from the paint bucket, you should use a squeegee. Dip the paint roller into the paint and roll it over the squeegee several times. Repeat this process until the paint roller is completely covered with paint.
With paint tray: Dip the paint roller into the paint and roll over the textured surface of the paint tray. Repeat this process until the paint roller is completely wetted with paint.
Paint large areas of walls
Work “wet on wet”. While still wet, the wall paint is worked over with the large paint roller. This prevents unsightly paint edges from forming. The same method is recommended for flat wall painting in order to achieve smooth and even wall surfaces.
The paint roller is placed at shoulder height on the wall , the wall paint is distributed by rolling first upwards and then downwards. The telescopic pole also makes it easy to reach higher sections of wall from the floor.
Avoid streaks: After about three coats of paint have been applied, the paint surface is leveled by “smoothing” the surface across again. To do this, roll over the areas that have already been painted without dipping the paint roller into the paint first. Always keep the same speed when painting so that the same amount of paint is always applied within a certain period of time.
Allow wall paint to dry
After painting the walls, you should give the wall paint enough time to dry – four to six hours. Only recoat lime paints after 24 hours , see technical data sheet.
Even if streaks become visible during drying or the wall appears patchy, you should not paint over the surfaces again . The actual result will only be visible once it is completely dry.
Tip: The drying time of the wall paint depends on the condition of the substrate, the thickness of the applied paint and other conditions such as the room temperature. If sections are painted again during the drying phase, paint will be applied twice, resulting in blotchy walls. It is better to allow the paint to dry thoroughly and paint the wall again if necessary.
Store remaining paint residue
The original container can later be covered with a thin film so that little air remains in the container, thus preventing a skin from forming on the paint. Store leftover interior paint in a cool and frost-free place. Well-sealed interior paint will keep for approx. 12 months once opened.
It is also advisable to pour the leftover paint into an extra container and use it later.
